A diamond and pearl necklace and earrings worn by Princess Diana during one of her last public appearances will hit the auction block in New York next week during the "Iconic Objects" sale hosted by Guernsey's Auction House. The suite is expected to fetch between $1.5 million and $2.5 million.
Worn by the Princess of Wales just months before her death, the suite is the only known jewelry worn by Diana that is likely to ever be available for sale. The necklace was designed by Garrard, crown jeweler to the royal family until 2007, with design contribution from Princess Diana as well.
The platinum necklace is composed of five matching South Sea pearls, 12mm . In between the pearl drops are four marquise-cut diamond drops. There are 7 other marquise-cut diamonds in the centerpiece, making a total of 11 marquise-cut diamonds with a total weight of 7.71 carats. Three smaller marquise-cut diamonds at the rear of the necklace, has a total weight of 0.88 carats. The lower end of the necklace towards the scroll motif, is made up of two rows of brilliant-cut diamonds, but the rear of the necklace has only a single row of brilliant-cut diamonds. There are 164 brilliant-cut diamonds in the necklace, with a total weight of 42.35 carats.
The matching pair of pearl drop earrings of the suite are made of platinum, set with 15 brilliant-cut diamonds in each earring. The total weight of the 30 brilliant-cut diamonds in both earrings is 9.38 carats. Each of the earrings has a single large spherical South Sea pearl of the same diameter as the pearls found in the necklace (12 mm), hanging from below as a drop. Three marquise-cut diamonds also hang from below the floral cluster, on the outer side of the hanging pearl. The total weight of the six marquise-cut diamonds is 1.87 carats.

(From the Japan Times)
Ago Bay, Japan For decades, pearl farming took a toll on the local environment in Japan. Overproduction and pollution had destroyed many of the local marine inhabitants.
"There used to be all kinds of things in the bay-- swimming crabs, clams, sea bass, mozuku seaweed, and sea cucumbers," recalls 75 year old Akira Harajo. "But for 30 years now there have been almost no eels, and for 10 or 15 years there have been no Japanese littleneck clams. And it was us pearl farmers who polluted the bay."
Farmers have realized the detrimental effects caused by raw sewage piped directly into the waters. They can see the consequences in the depletion of marine life and in the direct impact it has to the pearl quality.
In theory pearl production is beneficial to the marine environment, except in the case of the farms in Ago Bay where the overproduction of oysters led to farmers growing too many oysters. Droppings and debris covered the sea floor and benthic organisms devoured this waste. The organisms used a huge amount of oxygen and caused hypoxia that killed many fish and other sea creatures.
In 2008, Japan embraced the national policy of satoumi, a term that refers to the coastal landscapes where humans play a beneficial role in the environment. Satoumi stems from 'sato' which means village and 'umi' which means sea.
"Coastal seas must have high biodiversity and productivity. The most important thing is to consider the sea a habitat." said Tetsuo Yanagi, who coined the term 'satoumi' in 1997.

May 12 (Bloomberg) -- Gold futures rose to a record for the second straight day as financial turmoil in Europe spurred demand for an alternative to currencies.
“Gold is expensive, but people in the euro zone are moving out of their currencies and forcing themselves into gold,” said Adam Klopfenstein, a senior market strategist at Lind-Waldock in Chicago. “There’s a lot of fear on the part of the Europeans that moves to mitigate their debt crisis will only lead to more problems. People want to be in the currency of last resort.”

How classy!
When she took the stage with U.S. President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden for the announcement of her nomination to the Supreme Court, Solicitor General Elena Kagan wore one of her trademark pearl strands.
Kagan is the president's nominee to become the 112th justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. She is the first woman solicitor general, having been nominated by President Obama on January 26, 2009, and confirmed by the Senate on March 19, 2009.
If confirmed, she would become the fourth female justice in the Supreme Court's history, and the third on the current bench. She would also become the eighth Jewish justice in the Supreme Court's history, and the third on the current bench.
If you admire her style, you too can pull it off! Here, she's sporting dark gray Tahitian pearls, similar to our round black Tahitian pearl strand and matching Tahitian pearl studs.
She's also been spotted in a long pearl strand. We carry an ultra-long white freshwater pearl strand and matching freshwater pearl studs.
Finally, the pearl strand in which she is most often photographed is the simple single white pearl strand. Check out our gorgeous high-luster South Sea pearl strand and coordinating South Sea pearl drop earrings.

Writer Molly Fischer discusses the advantages of a pearl necklace to the census bureau:
The census bureau has discovered that people will speak most readily to a census-taker who looks similar to themselves. When it comes to counting the wily residents of the Upper East Side, this seems primarily to involve wearing a pearl necklace.
“On Park Avenue, sometimes you get a retiree or that person who has the pearls who can talk their way past a doorman,” New York regional census director Lester Farthing told The Times.
A native--someone conversant in the region's social codes and customs--is an asset, on not just in the "dusty border counties of South Texas" but on Park Avenue.
“We do not require you to wear pearls, but if you live locally, you will have access and be accepted,” reiterated Marilia A. Matos, the associate director for field operations.

The Melbourne Cup has long been known as an urban fashion spectacle. In the early 1800s, the race track was one of the few places in colonial Australia where high society and the lower classes came together socially. The first Australian race meet, held in 1810, established the culture of the Melbourne Cup and was part of a plan to improve the cultural life of Sydney.
With waning crowd attendances in the 1960s, the Victoria Racing Club Committee held the first Fashions on the Field competition at Flemington in 1962 to encourage female race goers back to the races. Fashions on the Field is a chance for women of all walks of society to compete for prizes in various fashion categories. It attracts immense media attention as well as outstanding creations from established and up and coming milliners, designers, dressmakers and tailors.
